Current Students
Whether you are a first year student or about to enter the final phase of your study programme at ECU the Careers Advisory Service (CAS) has something to offer you. However many students leave the university without ever having accessed our FREE services. Take the time NOW to find out what CAS does, where we are, and what YOU can do to ensure that when you start applying for jobs you are competitive and the successful applicant!

First regularly visit both JobsPlus (where the jobs are - accessible from our home page) and CareerLine (where you are now, the information arm of the site).

Second you will be provided with handing hints and suggestions for managing your career. Starting with the following:

Four Things You Should Be Doing Now To Manage Your Career.

All years!

1. If you have not done so already visit JobsPlus+ You are then encouraged to register with the service. By registering you receive regular e-mails on:
  • employment opportunities

  • information sessions and workshops

  • employer news and updates

  • career development hints

  • the monthly publication "Career News".

First Year Students

You are responsible for your career.. Start by knowing how we can help – Visit a CAS Office soon and

2. Join on campus clubs/societies and a Professional Association (Associate memberships as a student are often the way to go.) Get to know your lecturers (they make great referees).

3. Make a habit of gaining related Work Experience in your field of study (or employment areas that may interest you) over the break periods.

4. Begin your ePortfolio. Keep a track of all your career documents and evidence of the skills and knowledge you have developed and are acquiring.

Second / Penultimate Year Students

Your career path is as broad or narrow as you make it. So

2. Research and check out different occupations, industries. Begin to really explore and tease out where your degree can take you. Ask questions. Network (not just with employers but don’t forget them either)!

3. Take the time to get to know yourself – what are your skills and interests? Review jobs you may be interested in and see what skills you may need to develop as an extension to your course. Then do something about it! (Developing specific skills may, for instance, become the focus of one of your work experience placements.)

4. Apply for Vacation Programmes. Many employers ‘try before they buy’. Plus it is also a good way for you to see if you like a particular organisation. That means make sure your job application skills are up to scratch.

Final Year Students

Employers are recruiting now for 2008 (Yes in February 2007!) Don’t put planning your career on hold.

2. Apply for graduate programmes, register with on line recruitment sites, check the newspapers, use your networks. Start looking for graduate employment in Semester One.

3. Attend employer visits and workshops on campus (sometimes you may need to travel to another campus – do the travel it is worth it).

4. Fine tune your job application skills (including interview techniques and preparing for assessment centres). Attend CAS workshops. Ensure your ePortfolio is up to date with all essential information stored and easily retrievable.

** Not sure where to start with these ‘to do pointers’? Then why not attend a CAS workshop – Details on JobsPlus at the start of each semester!
