Students Frequently Asked Questions – About the Careers and Employment Fair, 2008.

Q. When is the ECU Careers & Employment Fair 2008?
A. Monday the 31st of March, 2008. The event opens at 11am and closes at 3pm.

Q. Where is the Careers Fair?
A. This year, the fair will be held at the Joondalup campus in the foyer of the new general purpose lecture theatre, Building 32. This is right next door to the library.

Q. I study at another campus, can I attend?
A. Yes. The ECU Careers & Employment Fair is for all ECU students – your friends and family are also welcome to attend.

Q. What is the purpose of the Career Fair?
A. The purpose of the Fair is to connect ECU students, especially final year students, with organisations that employ graduates.

Q. Why should I attend?
A. Here’s three great reasons:
• It’s a great place to start networking - meet recruiters, other job seekers, career professionals and employers.
• You can take advantage of ECU’s existing industry links: many of the employer groups at the fair have established links with ECU and are actively seeking ECU graduates!
• Explore International Opportunities: speak with multi-national organisations if you have aspirations to work abroad.

Q. Should I take my resume to the Careers and Employment Fair?
A. No. Please do not bring your resume along - there simply wont time or opportunity for industry representatives to review individual resumes. If you would like the company to consider you for a particular opportunity, you must follow their HR / hiring process.

Q. How can I make the best of the Career Fair?
A. A number of tips to maximise your experience and increase your employment opportunities are:

1. Identify and research prospective employers
• Review the list of organisations registered to exhibit (include link).
• Do some research on those organisations you may like to work for so you can speak knowledgably.

2. Consider what is it that you would like to achieve at the Career Fair
Have some awareness of the position titles and main responsibilities of jobs of interest. If you aren’t sure, find out by visiting job and career websites like:

seek.com.au
jobsearch.gov.wa.au
myfuture.edu.au

3. Be prepared to have an informal interview
Interviews won’t be carried out at the Fair. However, you may be asked questions by the companies’ representatives that resemble interview questions, for example:

• What is the degree you have / will have completed?
• Why did you decide to do this course / career?
• Why have you targeted this organisation?
• What do you know about us?

4. Consider your own questions.
Asking constructive questions demonstrates interest, for example:

• Why did you choose this career?
• What is a typical day for someone in this career?
• What special skills and abilities do you think successful candidates are hired for?
• Are new recruits assigned to mentors?

Q. Who should attend the Fair?
A. This event is particularly relevant to final year students who are investigating graduate employment opportunities commencing in 2008. However, students in earlier years are very welcome to attend. It's never too early to start exploring your career options!

Q. I am a mature age student, can I attend?
A. Yes! The skills, knowledge and life experience you can offer employers by virtue of your maturity, is a strength you should definitely capitalise on.

Q. I am an international student, can I attend?
A. Yes. Participating organisations will be able to provide information on operations abroad and supply useful international contacts. It’s important to note that many organisations employing within Australia will require candidates to be a permanent resident or have an Australian Citizenship.

Q. I am a postgraduate student, can I attend?
A. Yes. Postgraduate and Honours students are eligible to apply for graduate positions.
